Alcomancers Compendium of Currently Viable Builds

Post by Alcomancer »

Hello Amia,

I'm making a list of builds I've compiled on my discord server over the while I've used it, as long as some builds made by other users, with the intention of posting some very solid ones and compiling a list in this original post. All builds posted will function as intended under the current amia system changes, and if I need to make edits to builds in the future I certainly will.

This is currently a placeholder post until I actually start converting things over from the old discord, but when they're posted I'll have them listed under the bullet point list with hyperlinks so you don't have to hunt for them below.

Enjoy, and happy concepting.

The Cookie Cutter Wizard

Post by Alcomancer »

The Cookie Cutter Wizard

Easy to play, easy to level wizard that gets all the metamagic and isn't really bothering with crafting, but has the option. If one wants to go other routes, it is possible to drop strong soul and luck of heroes for certain abilities pre-epic (for crafting feats or a second spell school), and to swap out either mummy dust or dragon knight for another alternative ability - such as a secondary epic spell focus. It is recommended you make your decision on which summon to take based on your spell focus of choice and alignment.

Class Spread: Wizard 26/Fighter 2/ Rogue 2

PROS:
  • Gets evasion
  • Can do 2 schools or just 1 school and the crafting feats
  • Solid saves against most things that respect spellcraft
  • 400 hit points fully buffed
  • 59-60 AC just walking around
  • Easily get 37-38 fortitude to resist dev crits
CONS:
  • Spell book widgets being out of commission means a lot more time spent in your spellbook, if this gets fixed you can craft specific spell books to specific situations THEY FIXED THIS BABYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
  • Even with spellbooks, you are not a sorcerer and may still be caught without the necessary spells out in the weeds
  • Does not spot well
  • Relies heavily on epic loot for its discipline, prone to getting knocked down otherwise
  • Does not have a great time against death attack widgets
Recommendations on Gearing & Epic Gear:
  • Epic Discipline Gloves are at the top of all your wish lists, combine with a theives hood for 73+ discipline
  • Belt of the Hard Road is basically the best belt in the module but is a rare drop
  • Pink Ioun Stones will save you gear space
  • Julas Shield mythalled to +5, +4 will serve you just fine until then
  • +5 Scarab of Protection and +4 resistance or fortification cloak will serve your saving throw needs, gaps can be filled with spellcraft on gear until you get epic versions
  • DEX, CON, and WIS to round out your saving throws where you have the room
  • Some STR will be on your QOL list both for carrying capacity and occasionally not being iron horned, the latter is not very likely to work but does occasionally save me. Still better to spell mantle or globe of invulnerability when you think its coming.
STAT Spread:

Basic
STR: 11 (You'll thank me later)
DEX: 12 (We'll need this for AC and reflex saves anyway so roll with it)
CON: 14
INT: 17 (24)
WIS: 10
CHA: 10

Min-Max (More CON is always better)
STR: 11
DEX: 12
CON: 16
INT: 17 (24)
WIS: 8
CHA: 8

Pre Epic Levels:

1 - Wizard 1 - Luck of Heroes, (If Human) Strong Soul
2 - Wizard 2 -
3 - Wizard 3 - Great Fort
4 - Wizard 4 - +1 INT (18)
5 - Wizard 5 - Spell Focus (Dealer's Choice)
6 - Wizard 6 - Lightening Reflexes
7 - Wizard 7 -
8 - Wizard 8 - +1 INT (19)
9 - Wizard 9 - Iron Will
10 - Wizard 10 - Greater Spell Focus (Dealer's Choice)
11 - Wizard 11 -
12 - Wizard 12 - Metamagic: Extend, +1 INT (20)
13 - Wizard 13 -
14 - Wizard 14 -
15 - Wizard 15 - Metamagic: Maximize, Tougness
16 - Fighter 1 - Blind Fight +1 INT (21)
17 - Rogue 1 - Tumble 20, UMD 15
18 - Wizard 16 - Dealers Choice Options: Brew Potion, Craft Magic Arms, Metamagic Feat, Additional Spell Focus, Spell Penetration (Builder Recommends Brew Potion, Haste Potions will always be good)
19 - Wizard 17 -
20 - Wizard 18 - +1 INT (22)

Epic Levels:

21 - Wizard 19 - Epic Fortitude
22 - Wizard 20 - Epic Spell Focus
23 - Wizard 21 -
24 - Wizard 22 - Epic Spell: Epic Mage Armor (Or a summon if you want it sooner), +1 INT (23)
25 - Wizard 23 - Epic Spell: Mummy Dust (Or Dragon Knight or Epic Mage Armor)
26 - Wizard 24 -
27 - Wizard 25 - Epic Spell: Greater Ruin
28 - Rogue 2 - Tumble 30, (Skills for Fun: Search 31, Disable Trap 31, Lore/Appraise 31) +1 INT (24)
29 - Fighter 2 - Discipline 32, Armor Skin
30 - Wizard 26 - Spellcraft 33, Concentration 33, Heal 33, Lore 33 (or Appraise 31 if you went that route), Epic Spell: Hellball, Epic Spell: Dragon Knight (or Mummy Dust or Epic Mage Armor)

Gear List:
So this is a little malleable. instead, I'll be giving you a priority list of what you need to be getting yourself first before giving you an example of what I've run in the past on a build like this.

Priority 1: +12 INT
Priority 2: +7 CON (Pink Ioun Stone will help)
Priority 3: The Abyss store staff
Priority 4: Any 0% ASF Chain Shirt
Priority 5: +4 (+5 later) Julas Shield
Priority 6: +5 Fort Cloak
Priority 7: +5 (+6 later) Scarab of Protection
Priority 8: +4 (Later +5) Dodge boots - Ideally +5 dodge/+3 int/con/dex based on whatever stat you're currently trying to build for
Priority 9: +30 Discipline Gloves and a Thieves Hood for an additional +10 Discipline (Super Endgame gear, but attainable because you farm bosses like no one else can)

That looks like a long list, just knock things out where you can and try to upgrade as you get better gear. Mythal yourself some +5 craft armor rings ASAP so you can do your own mythal work as this build doesn't have craft armor, but has exactly 45 spellcraft.

For buying gear you can very, very easily solo your way through the abyss and brog gauntlet just using greater sanctuary and thanks to the recommended search and disable trap ranks in your build you'll be able to casually disable any traps that might be in your way. Just make sure to keep improved invisibility running so you can avoid being attacked by anything when gsanc wears off.

Here's a recommended best-in-slot list for getting your saves, discipline, and other stuff where you want it to be without resorting to full plate from a DC request or a plot like I have. You need dex for evasion anyway so full-plate is a vanity item this build can forgo entirely. It's a flex that's mostly insubstantial in the long run.

Head: Theives Hood - Amia Gnome Merchant: +10 Disciple, +2 Dex (Mythal) (Sub out for crab helmet for undersea adventures)
Chest: Caster Chain - Abyss or Gauntlet Merchant: 0% ASF, +2 INT (Mythal) +5 Discipline
Main Hand: Staff of Power - Abyss Shop - Tons of Spell Slots (Don't Mythal this)
Off Hand: Julas Shield - Triumvir Shop: 0% ASF, +5 AC (Mythal)
Gloves: Epic Gloves of Discipline - Epic Loot: +30 Discipline, +2 INT (Mythal), +1 DEX (Mythal)
Belt: Belt of the Hard Road - Epic Loot: +2 CON, Freedom, +2 Regeneration
Boots: Greaves of the Stalwart Defender - Epic Loot: +5 Dodge AC, +3 CON (Don't mythal this)
Cloak: +5 Fortification - Epic Loot - +5 Deflection, +5 Universal Saves (Don't mythal this)
Necklace: +6 Scarab of Protection - Epic loot - +6 Universal Saves (Don't mythal this)
Ring 1: Ring of Clear thought +4 - Trash Mobs or the above shops - +4 INT
Ring 2: Ring of Clear thought +4 - Trash Mobs or the above shops - +4 INT

What this gives you:
  • 77 standing discipline before Bull's Strength (80 with it)
  • +12 INT
  • +7 CON (Max with endurence)
  • +3 DEX (20 with Cat's for capping AC)
  • +11 Universal Saves (Putting you at the +20 save cap with your 45 spellcraft modifier of +9 vs magic)
This is obviously just an example of what can be done. I've ran almost this exact gear set before. If you get lucky enough to find a +5 INT ring in the lootbin you can also do what I did and grab yourself a gray wizard's ring and mythal +2 INT on it and figure out another spot for +1 INT in your gear (You have the room to play around) for a free 9th level slot. The possibilities are limitless and this is only a basic epic loot wish list.

Overall this build will never struggle at doing wizard-things. You cast mass haste, drop black blade of disaster and supprot your party. Cast improved invisibility and run around heal kit spamming your party (consider getting +30 heal gloves for these occasions) or do what I do and just tank because you have 64 ac and if the mobs are attacking you, your party gets +2 ab from flanking, meaning the mobs die faster. You're concealed and have DR so you're never really gonna suck at the front lines, you just aren't going to be doing any damage.

And remember, when you run out of summons always remember that the party you're with are better than any summons. Heal kits extend their duration so keep them standing.

Happy mass hasting.

The Ranger Monk

Post by Alcomancer »

Ranger Monk

A build designed to take full advantage of the ranger's bane of enemies and favored enemies feats, while getting maximum progression for its animal companion. This build excels in doing what most DEX builds can't: Direct damage not dependant on sneak attacks. It's versatile with its gearing and can go 1 handed and shield, dual wield kamas for a flurry, or swap to a single weapon with no shield when it needs to guarantee hits on a hard target while having what might likely be the best pet in the game now - yes, even better than Lawful Blackguard's Amnizu.

CLASS SPREAD: Ranger 25/Fighter 4/Monk 1

PROS:
  • Monk 1 gives us so many goodies
  • Dual weilding onhit:blind kamas will be better than any dev crit you've ever seen
  • Favored Enemy is +6 Damage, Bane is +2d6, Divine Favor is +5, Epic Weapon Specialization is +6, so we're easily out DPSing dex WMs.
  • +1 AC from wisdom never hurt no one
  • Did I mention flurry of blows?
  • You can switch between monk attacks and dual weilding whenever you need the AC
  • UMD is for pussies
CONS:
  • Not as much damage as going STR
  • No Epic Dodge
  • UMD is not for pussies
Good Race Choices
  • Human (The build is written for it)
  • Chultan (Just better human)
  • Dwarf (CON is king)
  • Aasimar (+2 WIS evens out the -2 CON)
  • Hobgolin (Bumps both of your favorite stats)
  • Anything that doesn't give -WIS, -DEX, or -CON
  • You CAN go elf if you want too, same attribute situation as Aasimar but you get DEX instead of WIS

STAT SPREAD:
STR: 11 (Never go below this, you need to carry stuff)

STR: 12 (Your back will thank you later)

The Dev Crit Weapon Master

Post by Alcomancer »

The Dev Crit Weapon Master

This is a tried and true beginners build. Highly recommended for people new to the game but there are better alternatives if you've never played NWN before. This build has lower saves due to its lack of feats free to spend on increasing your base saving throws but makes up for it with dev crit. Dev crit is fun, but generally considered by this author to be a waste of four feats when a weapon with an onhit-proc can be used to blind, stun, fear, or otherwise debilitate targets with more reliability despite the occasional opponent immune to these effects. However, in PvE Dev Crit is fun. Hell, even with a 45 fort I've still occasionally been popped by dev crit, so it still works sometimes. It also occasionally procs on epic bosses and DM spawned bosses during plot events, giving players a lot of free hits and even occasionally saving a raid or two. No one will ever complain about a Dev Critter joining the party, but there are better options that increase your overall survivability.

Author Note: Your level/Feat spread will look different for non-humans, but you'll still be leveling Fighter 10/WM 10 pre epic. You might just choose to lose improved expertise to fit in an extra prerequisite for your prestige class.

Class Spread:
Fighter 12/WM 16/Rogue 2

PROS:
  • Weapon Masters hit hard
  • Weapon Masters hit often
  • Gets evasion baked into the build
  • Reasonably solid reflex saves thanks to its base DEX requirement from dodge and having Reflex as a primary save for its prestige class
  • Gets all the bells and whistles as far as weapon feats go
  • Dev Crit procs often on monsters
  • Can enter improved expertise on demand
  • Swords never run out of spell slots
  • You're basically the best true striker in the game
  • Has UMD
CONS:
  • Dev Crit will not work reliably against players
  • Low Will saves (just chug clarity and pray you don't get hit with Word of Faith)
  • You might get bored since you don't have an actual rotation other than some basic buffs from potions
  • No spot
  • Has to rely on UMD more than it might like for some situations
  • 12 CON

STAT SPREAD:
STR: 18 (26)
DEX: 13
CON: 12
INT: 13
WIS: 8
CHA: 8

Half-Orc Alternative
STR: 19 (26)
DEX: 13
CON: 14
INT: 14
WIS: 8
CHA: 6

Pre-Epic Spread:
Fighter 10/Weapon Master 10

1 - Fighter 1 - Dodge, Expertise, Weapon Focus: Scimitar
2 - Fighter 2 - Mobility
3 - Fighter 3 - Toughness
4 - Fighter 4 - Weapon Specialization: Scimitar, +1 STR (19)
5 - Fighter 5 -
6 - Fighter 6 - Spring Attack, Whirlwind Attack, take 4 Intimidate Ranks cross class
7 - Weapon Master 1 - Weapon of Choice: Scimitar
8 - Weapon Master 2 - +1 STR (20)
9 - Weapon Master 3 - Improved Critical (Scimitar)
10 - Weapon Master 4 -
11 - Weapon Master 5 -
12 - Weapon Master 6 - Blind Fight, +1 STR (21)
13 - Weapon Master 7 -
14 - Weapon Master 8 -
15 - Weapon Master 9 - Power Attack
16 - Weapon Master 10 - +1 STR (22)
17 - Fighter 7 -
18 - Fighter 8 - Cleave, Great Cleave
19 - Fighter 9 -
20 - Fighter 10 - Improved Expertise (or Knockdown but you do have Dev Crit), +1 STR (23)

Epic Level:
21 - Weapon Master 11 - Great Strength I (24)
22 - Rogue 11 - Tumble: 25 Ranks
23 - Weapon Master 12 -
24 - Weapon Master 13 - Epic Weapon Focus, Overwhelming Critical, +1 STR (25)
25 - Weapon Master 14 -
26 - Weapon Master 15 -
27 - Weapon Master 16 - Devastating Critical, Armor Skin
28 - Rogue 2 - +1 STR (26), Tumble: 30 Ranks, UMD: 30 Ranks
29 - Fighter 11 -
30 - Fighter 12 - Epic Weapon Specialization, Epic Prowess, Discipline: 33 aRanks, Concentration: 33 Ranks, Spellcraft: 5 Ranks (Or Heal: 10 Ranks)

GEAR RECOMMENDATION:
Chest: Arcane Defiance Plate - Epic Loot - +5 AC, +2 Universal Savs, 32 SR
Main Hand: Wailing Wind Scimitar - Epic Loot - +5 EB, 1d4 Magic Damage, 1d4 Sonic Damage, Keen, OnHit: Hold DC20, 50%/2 Rounds
Off Hand: The Last Defense (Tower) - Epic Loot - +5 AC, +2 CON, 5/- Piercing
Helmet: Vitality of Myart - Epic Loot - +3 CON, +1 Universal Saves, 1 Regeneration, Water Breathing
Cloak: Cloak of Fortification +5 - Epic Loot - +5 AC, +5 Universal Saves
Gloves: Epic Gloves of Discipline - Epic Loot: +30 Discipline, +1 STR (Intermediate Mythal), +3 Fortitude (Greater Mythal) +3 Reflex (Greater Mythal)
Alt Gloves (For Fighting Casters) - Epic Gloves of Spellcraft
Belt: Stone Giant's Belt - Epic Loot - +6 STR
Ring 1: Nabassian Nail - Epic Loot - +3 STR, +1 Universal Saves, +5 Discipline
Ring 2: Ring of Power - Epic Loot - Freedom, 15/- Cold, Electric, Fire, 1 Regeneration
Ioun Stone: Pale Blue Ioun Stone - Epic Loot - +2 STR

This gear set is very expensive but gets us:
  • +12 STR
  • +8 CON (Chug potions until you hit 24 CON)
  • 82 Discipline
  • 37 fortitude (Before any spellcraft bonuses)
  • 28 Reflex with Evasion (35 vs spells if we swap to our spellcraft gloves, 38 if you buff with Cat's Grace)
  • 532 HP
  • 55 Standing AC (And 65 in improved expertise)
  • 51 AB before buffs
The gear lists are, as always, totally malleable based on what you can reliably get. This is mostly just here to show you what can be done. You can swap the ioun stone for a pink ioun stone if you'd like to be able to consistently reach +12 STR and CON, leaving you with +10 in both stats, however the current gear list allows you to be ready to fight at literally all times at full AB. You do have to work harder to get your fortitude score up on a Weapon Master than other builds, and your pre epic gear is going to be a bit of a crunch once you hit 30 but overall this build is totally viable. Your will is never going to be good though, that's the price you pay for dev crit. Just chug clarity and rush casters.
