  2. Rules of Amia

    1. Amia Rules and Information

      About Amia
      • Amia is a persistent world and we will all as DMs do our best to try and enhance your experience here. Please help us in doing so by reporting any bugs or exploits to the Amia forum.

This is a roleplay server, so most things done in real life can be done here. We ask that you exercise sound judgment when indulging in your roleplay activities. There are players here who may be younger than you. Also, please be mindful that some subjects are more sensitive than others.

If you have questions, please don’t be afraid to ask a DM or post here on the forums. In addition, consult your journal for notes and suggestions. We encourage you to use your personal in-game journal for your own major roleplay notes. Your journal is persistently saved along with your character.

Use your common sense and good judgement. We understand that DMs are not infallible and we listen to players when they have an opinion. If you feel something is unfair, let us know.
      RulesPlayers
      • Players are here to enjoy themselves while playing the game and interacting with each other. Players treat each other with respect, no matter how hostile the relations between their characters may be. Conflicts between players are primarily solved by the players themselves. A DM steps in when the players are unable to reach a solution that's acceptable to all parties involved.
      Characters
      • A character represents a living entity in the game world. Players are not allowed to give their characters knowledge or items that the character did not acquire through its interaction with the game world. Characters' IC actions result in IC consequences, so think before acting. In case of a dispute, DMs' decisions are to be followed. You should always "go with the flow" and accept the roleplay as it comes. No player can be forced to roleplay sexual acts or graphic violence. Roleplaying rape or pedophilia is strictly forbidden on Amia - please make no mention of this beyond allusion in your character's backstory, if it is relevant. No ongoing roleplay is permitted to involve either activity.
      DMs
      • A DM's task is to represent the game world and to keep it coherent. DMs also help the players with problems and decide on the interpretation of rules in a certain situation. Not every decision of a DM will be pleasant for every player; do not argue the matter ingame, but discuss this with the DM via a Private Message on the forums or on Discord. If you have a problem with a DM, contact a second DM to mediate.
      The Game World
      • Only DMs hold the right to decide the actions of NPCs (Non-Player Characters), deities, or any other entities active and present in the world of Amia. This includes stories posted in the PC Story forum which might dictate NPC actions. The use of non-NwN material in game is not mandatory, nor is knowledge of D&D lore a requirement to play on Amia. No player can be forced to play by any other rules than those included in the NwN game and Amia module, or those set by the DM staff. This means that you are not required to know or understand PnP spells or abilities, for example. For this reason, PnP spells and abilities always require player consent, unless a DM is overseeing the situation and clears the usage personally.

Once you enter the game world with your character, you are in-character. There is no OOC hunting or other situations. If your character is doing something, they are doing it IC. Only DMs may make exceptions to this with direct oversight.
      Exploits
      • NwN game bugs and Amia module bugs are not to be exploited. DM staff holds the right to decide what is an exploit. If you are unsure what is an exploit, ask before acting.
      About these rules
      • You will notice that aforementioned rules are not very detailed, and do not include set penalties. The DMs apply a rule to a situation and set the penalty if there is one. The ruling will be recorded and used for future reference in comparable cases.

    2. Do's and Don't's

      1. General Do's and Don't's to clarify the above rules
        • Do not log in with another character to do something your current character began. (i.e. To raise your party or to attack another PC).
        • Do not log in with multiple computers at the same time. This is also known as multiboxing, and is a bannable offense if you are caught doing it.
        • Do not log in with any character to do anything OOC. You can't just decide that your character isn't doing something that you are having them do. The only OOC rooms are those attached to the Entry and the Travel Agency/Faction Portal Room.
        • Do not log in with multiple computers at the same time. This is also known as multiboxing, and is a bannable offense if you are caught doing it.
        • Do not exploit bugs and glitches within the Neverwinter Nights game. If you are unsure what is considered an exploit and what isn't, please ask! This includes any third-party tools that modify character appearances in-game such as adding wings or tails. Client-side overrides that do not affect the module or the way other players play or perceive you are fine. Hackers will be banned without discussion!
        • Do not resort to PvP (Player vs Player) battle without ample IC (In Character) reason. Senseless killing of other characters will resort in harsh punishment. Simply being evil is not reason enough to kill someone. If you do enter into RP-inspired PvP that results in deaths of any PC (Player Character), you must provide an OOC raise for that character (either by yourself, or arrange for someone else to do it). For more information on the PvP rules, see here.
        • Do not camp any spawns, this means you can't sit on the same spawn and bring it out 3 or 4 times. This is especially so for boss spawns. If you want to go after epic bosses, leave and come back to do another round of the hunting area and let other people have a chance at it.
        • Do not metagame. Metagaming includes asking for a raise OOC, sending tells for help, and having a player port to your dead character with the purpose of raising it. Players caught doing this will be docked one level, and have half of their gold taken away. Multiple offenses will result in a ban from the game.
        • Do not transfer items or gold from one of your own characters to another of your own characters. This is referred to as muling and, if caught, all involved characters will be stripped.
        • Do not use your "Use Magic Device", or UMD skill to activate these items with a class specific OOC warning of use limitations if you do not have the appropriate class levels. The item will be removed from your character without compensation if you are found to be doing this.
        • Do not spam voicesets. (This means using the same your voiceset repeatedly and flooding chat). To experiment with a voice set, please find a secluded place where nobody else is around (there are plenty of these).
        • Do not run ahead of another group, when hunting. Do not collect treasure from corpses that your party did not kill.
        • Do not attempt to determine the acts of NPCs or history of Amia. That is for the DMs to decide. If you wish to take part in Amia's historical events, or roleplay a character that had a part in the making of Amia's history, contact a DM.
        • Do not give your characters titles that they supposedly earned on Amia, unless a DM grants you that title. If your character's past in some other land or plane involved him/her having a title, that is fine, as long as you don't claim to have any unearned influence on Amia. Note: Legitimate nobility which means you still retain that influence elsewhere must be requested prior to the character's creation.
        • Do remember, that only the DMs play gods and NPCs. That's why they are called Non-Player Characters. Making decisions for NPCs is not allowed and is considered a form of metagaming.
        • Do remember that each settlement has its own set of laws, and it's a good idea to get to know them when you frequent these areas.
        • Do remember, that explicit sexual (cybering) or graphic torture roleplay is not permitted in any channel. This includes sitting silently somewhere in a private area, clothed or unclothed, with another person. If a DM comes across you in such a position, they may believe it to be a compromising situation and you may be booted or banned. You can either log off and continue elsewhere or simply "fade to black" and skip roleplaying it out. (See here for specifics.)

    3. PvP Rules

      1. The following are rules to be used when engaging in PvP (Player vs. Player) combat. These rules are not optional (unless stated otherwise) and are to be used by ALL parties in PvP situations.

        Principles
        1. Amia is a role-playing server, not a PvP arena server.
        2. All PvP must have an IC reason. PvP without a sensible reason is not allowed. Your character's alignment alone is not a valid reason for PvP. Summons, such as undead, are a valid reason but do not excuse you from the below protocol.
        3. You must give the other party a reasonable chance to back down from the PvP In Character. This includes a clear "out" IC that they can respond to, such as clearly telling them to leave or you will attack them. Simple threatening gestures or emotes are not enough to clearly indicate an out, as it is not clear if a character will attack or if they are just trying to intimidate. If you don't get an answer IC and the PC tries to leave, assume that they are utilizing their right to flee the situation. You can't force PvP on anyone who is trying to leave the situation.
        4. IC Actions lead to IC Consequences. If you initiate a conflict (by insults or thievery, for example), you can't expect to get away with it. You cannot ignore other players' RP or declare it null.
        #
      2. Technicalities
        1. You must give the other party clear IC indication of your intentions to attack, and make sure they have reasonable time to react and possibly back down IC. This requires more than one word in warning.
        2. You must set all members of the opposing party to hostile status before performing hostile actions. Use the PvP tool, the player list, or the following chat commands: /f_hostile to set everyone to hostile at once, or /f_friend to set everyone to friendly.
        3. If you do not give the other party time to observe the usual protocol, you can't expect them to stick to the protocol. This means that by resting, buffing or other such preparations to hostility, you forfeit your right to a warning: The other party may attack you immediately to stop you. If you have not set them to Hostile before, you can't blame them for having to act without it. Both parties should strive to set each other to Hostile after the immediate reaction, however.
        4. The above goes for fleeing from hostile situations: If you turn tail and run without a word to avoid IC consequence, you can expect to be stopped by any means possible. Always give others reasonable time to react with RP!
        5. Subdual/killing: see this page for information about the different subdual mechanics for Amia.
        6. Assassinations: Assassins must inform a DM that they are about to perform a hit. If a DM is unavailable, the assassin must inform the target instead. It is advised that you screenshot as many details of an assassination hit as you can, including the warning and the combat log, for DM reference.
        7. If you clearly escape an altercation, you may not continue the "same" PvP later, unless such behaviour is explicitly agreed to by all involved parties. If you return to the scene of the altercation, it is a new encounter with all the above rules. Parties may agree to a "mutual aggression" pact, where it is agreed that hostilities may commence whenever these parties interact. This must be supported by previous role-play, and is generally done when two factions (such as drow houses) have on going IC disputes that end in hostilities. It is the responsibility of the faction leaders to make sure everyone involved knows about the situation. Should this be the case, please inform the DMs about this in advance so that they know what is going on.
        8. Traps are considered PvP. Do not set them down to damage random people: you are responsible for your traps and their victims.
        9. Taunting someone with the Taunt-skill, using Turn Undead summons, and casting spells such as Darkness is considered initiating PvP. You should set Hostile before doing that.
        10. If robbed, you are not required to hand over items you do not wish to give away OOC; emoting that they are transferred IC is sufficient.
        11. If your character is captured, and the character who caught him/her wishes to keep your character locked away, they can do so for a period of 24 RL hours, without your OOC consent. However, roleplay with the captive must be provided for those 24 hours. If it is not, then you cannot force the captive character to remain "locked away", unless you come to an OOC agreement on the matter. Keeping a character captive for longer than 24 RL hours requires the OOC consent of the player of the captive PC. In certain instances a DM can enforce captivity, but this is rarely done. Again, screenshots are advised. Settlement bans for more than 24 hours must be approved and communicated by a DM.

These rules are subject to changes and additions at any time, so you should check them periodically, as you should with all posted rules and guidelines. #
    4. Muling

      1. MulingMuling is prohibited on Amia. Muling constitutes as follows: passing items and/or gold from a character to another, when both characters are in the possession of the same player. The characters being on different GameSpy ID's or CD keys does not negate the act being muling. The methods for this are varying, but any method where the items end up from one of your PCs to another, is muling.

Players caught muling will face punishments: Complete strip of all offending characters on the first offense, and an additional two-week ban on the second, increasing in length if more violations occur.
        #
    5. Expectations

      1. Expectations

What can you expect from your fellow Amians? Most troubles between players are caused by a mixture of mismatching expectations and short fuses. No posts are going to help the latter, but here are some tips to fix the former:

        1. You can expect from players that they have a decent knowledge about the game they bought, and that they have the manuals. You can also expect that they have read the online comments about Amia-specific changes to the NWN ruleset. This means that there is an implicit agreement on the rules described in these sources, and that any arguments about them can be easily solved by a quick reference. You can expect them to learn what they've missed before.
        2. You can expect from players that they have noted the category this server is in, namely "Roleplaying". This means that you are welcome to comment on excessive OOC talking, obvious metagaming, unrealistic behavior and other things that spoil your roleplay. It does not entitle you to act like a jerk to the offender for a first offense.
        3. You can expect that players come here to have fun, and not to spoil your fun. Griefing, unwanted OOC comments, vulgarity, and OOC profanity are not things that are appreciated by everyone. If you feel offended by anyone, take the time to express your feelings to him/her in a decent and constructive manner. If things do not get any better, feel free to contact the DMs. We will ask if you have approached the player in question first, however, so please make an effort to be mature about such conflicts.
        4. You can expect that players have a working knowledge of English. You won't be blamed if any problems arise because your opponent simply doesn't understand what you say while you are using normal English.

What can you NOT expect from your fellow Amians? On the other side of the coin, there are things that you simply cannot expect of others. Here are some:
        1. You cannot expect that players own any D&D materials. The NWN box doesn't list it below "requirements" and neither do the signs in the Entry. If you want to use rules/spells/skills that are not in the sources mentioned in the post above, you MUST make sure the involved player agrees with using those rules. You also must make sure every participant is aware of the rules appropriate to the situation, and has read the skill/spell descriptions, and is aware of possible counter-spells and/or counter-skills, so that they can react correctly to what your character is attempting to do. For example: If you are in a fight and you tell your position to people by allowing scrying, but you didn't inform the enemy, you can be accused of metagaming when your saviors suddenly rush in, buffed and all.
        2. You cannot expect people to be good roleplayers, or your kind of roleplayer. You can only expect people to try their best, and you should help them to become even better. Take the time to invest in people who want to roleplay. You only just started out once as well.
        3. You cannot expect the DMs to help you with everything, and you also have a responsibility to try to solve things in an amiable manner. Exploding at the first step on your toes isn't the right way to deal with things.
        #
    6. Etiquette

      1. Roleplaying Etiquette

Roleplaying can be both fun and frustrating. These are some general rules of thumb that help cut down the frustration. While most of these are already covered in our rules somewhere, these guidelines should be easy to understand and follow.

        • Stay In Character (IC) at all times.
          • Do not drop Out Of Character (OOC) in the Talk channel unless absolutely necessary, and mark your OOC comment like ((this)) or //this. Use OOC discussion in the Party channel in moderation. Roleplaying in Tells is not allowed unless a DM explicitly asks for it or you are moving to the Tell channels for cybering/graphic torture roleplay, or to send IC messages (like with the p&p Sending spell). Regular RP and dialogue that isn't restricted like this must be done in the talk channels, so that DMs and/or characters you may not be able to see can react accordingly if necessary.
Never use OOC information IC in any way.
          • For example: Just because you can see someone’s name hanging over their head in-game doesn't mean your character knows that character’s name - unless someone tells you IC, of course.
Never assume someone will react a certain way just because you think they should.
          • Always give others the chance to react in their own way, and don’t get upset if the reaction isn’t what you expected.
Any action you perform on someone else’s character, no matter what the action might be, should be phrased as an attempt.
          • By making an attempt instead of just doing it outright, you give the character’s player the chance to consent to the action or avoid it if it’s something they’d rather not have happen to their character.
Be considerate of the role-playing mood of others.
          • If you come into a situation where other characters are already engaged in some RP, don’t just leap in with a radically different mood unless you get permission (Either IC or OOC, depending on the situation and whether you have any way to contact them OOC). As an example: say there is a couple sitting at a table discussing a recently deceased character and you jump in acting like a court jester and spill their drinks in their laps while telling bad jokes. You aren’t going to make friends like this if your actions offend the players behind the characters. This is not a rule, it's common courtesy.
Don’t try to be the center of attention all the time.
          • Be polite and share attention with other characters. You aren’t the only one here to have fun; give everyone their turn in the spotlight.
Give others time to react to you.
          • One of the strangest things in graphical online RPGs is impatience. People will walk up, say something, wait about 0.0001 seconds and run off. The person they talked to would barely have had enough time to read what they said, let alone respond to it. This also happens in conversations. People will say something, wait a very short amount of time, then keep going as if they think the person they were talking to didn’t hear them or isn’t going to respond. In most cases, the other person was going to respond but simply wasn’t as fast as expected, and loses the chance because the conversation has moved on without them. There’s no need to hurry so much, just relax and enjoy the interaction. Frequent extremely long dialogue can fall under this guideline also. Oftentimes wordy dialogue paragraphs either address too many things at once or come off as a monologue. Keep things succinct to encourage interaction whenever possible.
Do not give god-like abilities to your characters.
          • RPing isn’t about who can make up the best super powers for their characters; it’s about exploring and growing the personalities of the characters. Any character that is ridiculously powerful or has a perfect personality is going to be fairly boring to RP with and will end up being mostly ignored by others.
Never include someone else’s character in a written story that didn’t actually happen exactly as you wrote it without letting that character’s player proofread and approve the story before you post it.
          • When writing up a story about combat that happened in-game, don’t be literal. Gaming engines invariably have the loser of a fight "die". Since no one likes building characters over and over, there’s always some way to get raised from the dead. But just because you killed someone’s character and chopped up their body in the game doesn’t give you the right to write this up exactly as the combat engine portrayed it. There are two reasons for this:
            • The player behind the character that lost has to find a way to get Resurrected and put back together so it makes sense.
            • The player is forced to choose between ignoring your rendition of it and letting their character be permanently dead or maimed.
It gets very old having people die all the time and getting dismembered only to show up the next day just fine. It would also get old if people had to waste their character development by killing off their character due solely to something that happened based on the combat engine of the game (which we all know is much less than fair due to lag and computer crashes) and not on RP. So it’s polite to alter events a little bit. If the combat was a large battle, mention casualties but don’t give names to the dead. Just assume the two sides had several no-name extras along for the fight that can provide convenient dead bodies. If it was a duel, then have it be to first blood or to loss of consciousness. Unless of course a character’s true death was agreed upon OOC ahead of time by the character’s player, but these situations will be very rare and are solely under the purview of the player who owns the character, if it is a matter of PvP. You simply cannot dictate when another player's character is permanently dead.

    7. Adult RP

      1. Adult RP
Ruling on Adult RPEffective 29 June, 2021, this ruling has been fully changed.

Explicit sexual or graphic torture roleplay is not permitted in any channel.
        • "Explicit" sexual RP (or cybering) refers to actions or descriptions involving any form of sexual behavior. If clothes come off for the deed, or there is any sexual groping through clothing or into clothing, or there is any kind of sexual activity that involves making another character feel good in a sexual way, you MUST log off and continue elsewhere or simply "fade to black" and skip roleplaying it out. We as DMs don't want to be hopping around to watch RP and see characters holed up in private areas, doing the deed in silence. We also don't want players who are actively looking for RP to have to wonder where people are and why they can't find anyone. This is not a social server and it will not be treated like one, as it was when this rule was different for the first ten months of the launch to EE. This is a roleplay server and if you are online on Amia, you should be interested in the server story and participating as a player with others. The Team feels that sexual RP is detrimental to this, and thus will not be allowed.

Graphic Torture refers to detailed descriptions of gore or maiming coming to any character, whether it's consensual IC or not. If it's grotesque and would make your teenage sister uncomfortable, you must fade to black or log off the server and continue your graphic RP elsewhere.
        Specific Rulings:
        1. Under no circumstances will a player who is a minor under the age of 18 be involved on Amia in either adult RP category listed above. If you do not know the other player well enough to indisputably know if this is a problem, then don't get yourself into the situation to begin with.
        2. Forbidden Scenarios & Topics: Rape, Pedophilia, Incest, Necrophilia, Snuff, and Bestiality. Do not RP these situations in any form. If you are seen partaking in these, you will be banned immediately. If you are seen talking about these things happening to your character or others, the below warning and banning procedure will take place. There are many people who are uncomfortable with these topics. Do not bring them into your RP, period. For those who have something like this in their background, it can only be vaguely alluded to and never described in any detail.
        3. Bans: Bans will be given to those who do not adhere to the above rulings. The following offense steps will take place for anyone partaking in Explicit Sexual RP or Graphic Torture, as described above. Anyone caught partaking in the listed Forbidden Scenarios & Topics will start with the second offense ban (ii) listed below and proceed from there.
          1. First Offense: You will receive a warning to cease. This wiggle room for the first offense is in place because some players may not understand where the cut-off is. When you receive the warning, stop the RP, log off or fade to black, and bear it in mind for next time.
          2. Second Offense: You will receive a two-week ban from the game.
          3. Third Offense: You will receive a ban from the game that will be anywhere between a month and six months, depending on your attitude and behavior. It's a simple rule, and breaking it this many times is just a case of ignoring it or disrespecting others on the server.
          4. Fourth Offense: If you go through a long-term ban for the above Third Offense and still get caught breaking this rule, you will likely be permanently banned for having clear disrespect for the server.
        4. IMPORTANT: All roleplay in the "sexual" category must be consensual both IC and OOC, even if you only roleplay this off-server. Consent IC is not mandatory for the torture, of course, but OOC consent of both parties must be obtained. There will be no forcing of such RP on anyone, even though it must be done off the server. If we receive reports and evidence that a player is trying to force this kind of RP on someone else through third-party means (such as Discord), the DM Team reserves the right to apply the above Offense procedure at any step at their discretion. Harassment of any form will not be tolerated and we take these measures to protect our player base in the only way that we can.
        5. NOTE: As stated above, do not discuss or allude to the Forbidden Topics IC. Do NOT start or continue RP that shines a sexually abusive light on any other character, period. This is a zero-tolerance policy and always has been. If you feel someone has done something that goes against this rule (on either side of the topic), DO NOT engage with it in any way. Screenshot it and send it to the DMs immediately. For example, if your character has an IC reason to believe that someone else is actively a rapist, screenshot and report the situation which brought you to this conclusion. Do not engage with the character by calling them a rapist and drawing attention to this topic. It is too harmful to other players who may be understandably sensitive to these things.

        Final Notes:
If a DM finds you huddled with another person in a private place, clothed or unclothed, and neither character is saying anything for an extended period of time, the DM may contact you under the assumption that you are participating in Adult RP, against the rules. If you are trying to sneakily cyber in the game, the above Offense steps will apply. If you aren't, feel free to screenshot your full chat bar and send it to us on Discord so we can see that you were not. If you need to go AFK for an extended amount of time and you happen to be in a potentially compromising position despite the fact that you're not participating in forbidden RP, we recommend you log off to avoid a misunderstanding like this. If you just log off to escape the situation, the Offense steps will still apply.

We don't have any indicator that says whether a DM is online, so don't push your luck and risk a ban just because you're lazy and don't want to log out for your explicit RP. We are not going to be especially lenient in this regard.

This ruling about adult RP extends to talking about it to others. Only do so in private areas and with full consent of all players. Many other players are not comfortable with or just don't want to partake in discussions about adult situations. Whether you are comfortable with it or not, do not force even conversations about it onto others. As such, do not talk about these things in public places. If a DM sees you whispering where others may encounter it (such as whilst standing in the middle of a high-traffic area), you may be asked to take it elsewhere. This doesn't mean you're not allowed to kiss or cuddle in public. It just means you cannot talk about sex or sexual encounters in public where just anyone can overhear you.

We try to accommodate many different styles of RP on Amia, but some preferences have gotten completely out of hand and have been detrimental to others' experiences. Many people do not come here for sexual/adult RP and don't want to see it, so keep adult RP off the server and conversations that refer to adult RP in private places, with people who have fully consented to being subjected to it. Period.
